Happy 3 Month Birthday, William!

Three months already! Here is what we have been up to this month:
-William has fallen into a routine! He is consistently napping 3 times a day. He goes from pleasant and happy to crying at 6 pm sharp when he wants to have his tubby, nurse, and go to bed! He usually goes to bed around 7:30-8.
-he has been sleeping for longer stretches at night- we have even had a few nights where he has slept 8 hours!
-he still *loves* his tubby!

-he is smiling all the time now and starting to coo.

-inconsistent, but he has giggled a few times (and even has a ticklish spot right beneath his ribs)
-his reflux is getting much better and he is tolerating being on the floor more- he likes to look at his toys and kick his feet
-he has stated looking for his thumb and is a happy little boy when he finds it!
-he is getting stronger at lifting his head up and can hold himself propped on elbows for a couple minutes at a time
-he is starting to grab and reach for things
-he loves to watch his super cool older brother! (and who wouldn't? Because he's adorable, too!)

Happy 2 Month Birthday, William!

We have had a wonderful month with our little guy. He is starting to spend more time awake and interact with us more. He is smiling often and more intentionally now- he has the sweetest smile! He is happy and laid back, except when he wants to eat! He loves the outside and often we are able to quiet by walking him outside.

His medical issues are under control now (he has reflux) and we are able to relax and enjoy him more now that we know what the problem is and how to address it. He loves to be held and has to be most of the time, which is just great with him! He is mommys little helper and spends a lot of his day strapped to my front in one of his slings. He is able to hold his head better and he loves to just look around while I walk around the house. He particularly enjoys staring at the Christmas tree as well as the fan.
He loves to take baths and "float" in the warm water. We are starting to establish a routine with him and he just loves his nightly tubby. Our nursing difficulties of the early days are a thing of the past and he eats like a champion now! He is growing and healthy and we thank God every day for bringing him into our lives.

     Happy 3rd birthday buddy!!! You have been looking forward to this day for months now! So much has changed for you this year- and not just
developmentally. You have sailed with ease through a big move, constant schedule changes, and a new baby. You are always so happy and easygoing- your ability to just go with the flow continuously impresses me. You have a love for new adventures and have definitely proved to be our "portable baby".
     This year has also been a year of growth for you. You have transformed from a toddler to a preschooler seemingly overnight. You are such a smart little boy. You understand so much of what is going on and being said around you. Sometimes you spout out vocabulary words that truly astound me. Not long ago you informed me that it was going to rain as you noted cumulonimbus clouds in the sky! I wonder if someday soon I'll have to start studying up on things so that I have something to teach you!
     Everyday I feel as though you show us more and more of your wonderful personality. You have a kind soul and a gentleness about you- which reminds me of something that made me fall in love with your daddy; yet you are all rough and tumble boy. You love to play outside, trains and cars. You are a social butterfly- you love to play with other kids (especially little girls 4x your age!) and seem to thrive in interacting with other people.
     For the last few months you have started trying to establish your sense of self and independence. You are constantly reminding us that you are no longer a baby as you do more and more for yourself. However, I know that you still need us and I worry about how my lack of attention to you lately will affect our relationship long term. Please know that we will always love you and be here for you. You have forever transformed us and have brought us so much love and joy. I am excited to grow with you and see what the next year has in store.

Happy 1 Month Birthday, William!

How it is that a month has passed already? We have had a very full month with lots of change, lots of company, and little sleep. William had somewhat of a shaky start but after many trips to the doctor and a trip to the ER we are relived to say that he is healthy and growing like a champ! His birth weight was 6.15lbs and as of last week he was already up to 8.5lbs and has grown almost 2 inches in length!
Although William does not look much like his brother, he seems to be following Stephen's footsteps in other ways. He loves to cuddle and be held and has yet to spend more that one hour in his crib (mommy and William get lots of bonding time at night!) He loves the sling and spends several hours a day helping mommy take care of Stephen and prepare meals! He is good natured and generally easy-going (unless you put him down for too long!) He gave mommy the gift of his first social smile and over the past few days has become much more alert. He is starting to coo, look around, and kick his extremities more.

We are settling into life as a family of four and feel so blessed to have two perfect little boys in our life. We look forward to sharing William's milestones in the years ahead!

We are home and doing well. William loves to cuddle up on your chest to sleep and is picking up where his brother left off as far as protesting sleeping in the crib. Stephen is very gentle with William and asks to hold him on occasion. He is taking his big brother role very seriously and keeps talking about all the things
he is going to teach William!

We have had a tremendous amount of support and help from our family and don't know how this would be done without them- thanks guys!

This week, we enjoyed some family time and focused Stephen time on a last threesome vacation at Disney. We had a wonderful day at the park- Stephen was so excited to meet Mickey! His highlights of the day were the train, the Jungle Cruise, and Small World.

28 weeks

Dear Baby #2,
They say it happens to most second children....the first one has each moment of their life chronicled meticulously in a scrap booked album (or blog!) and the second child is lucky to get a box of unorganized photos. I am sorry that I have already fallen into that pattern, as I realized today that I have not taken but one shot of you in my growing belly. I joke that you are going to be my soccer player, as you kick me much more than your brother ever did, but I think you are just trying to remind me that you are in there and that I need to slow down from this hectic schedule that we have been carrying on for the past few months. I promise try to be more diligent in the future. We can't wait to meet you (I hope you like trains!).

EORCT, Part One: The Outer Banks

One of the perks of being chief resident is that you get to make the schedule. Thus, our oh so clever placement of a 2 week vacation can be termed our "end of residency celebration trip". Part one: the outer banks, Rodanthe, NC.

Stephen LOVES the beach!

Our condo sat right on Pamlico Sound. We spent our evening watching the kite boarders, taking in the sunsets, and soaking in our private jacuzzi right on our deck (set at a acceptable temperature for mommy and Stephen to enjoy!)

Swimy Lessons Part II

So amidst all the snow plus a pool pump problem, we just had week 2 of swimy lessons! Daddy was able to go this week though so I snapped some "action" shots!The main focus of class is teaching them how to climb out of the pool. Every lesson starts by singing "humpty dunpty" and then practicing climbing out!

He showed progress this week- he allowed Blue to let go while he tread water!

Dear Stephen,

Your second birthday sort of snuck up on me. In the few days since you have turned 2 it seems as though you are a different child; you are talking more, constructing mini-sentences and communicating your wants. Yesterday I was gathering things together for your bath and when I turned around you had already taken off most of your clothes. You are absorbing so much of the world around you and I can see you processing information and understanding much of it. You are a little boy. How did that happen so fast?
Your most recent love is for trains and all things with wheels. I wished I could have captured the look on your face when you opened your very first Thomas the Train toy on your birthday. You are starting to pretend more and more; I love to watch you play as I feel as though it is a window to who you are. Often times you will sing as you play, particularly songs from the Thomas sing-along movie. Uninhibited and innocent; I wish I could help you stay this way forever.
Our relationship has evolved over the past year. Everyday you are reminding me more and more that you are no longer a baby, but a toddler; you are starting to push limits, explore consequences, and learn cause and effect. While some might say that we are entering a tough phase, I find it intriguing to watch as each new encounter becomes a layer of who you are.
You are a gentle child, with a kind and loving soul. Although you rarely have time for me to hold you anymore, you occasionally afford me an impromptu kiss or hug which swells my heart with love. You have taken our sometimes hectic, on the go lifestyle with stride and a "Go dogs go!" You are such a blessing in our lives and we love you more than words can say.

Blue and my family surprised me with a trip to NC for my 30th birthday! We had a wonderful weekend in Brevard, NC soaking in the mountain air, running through corn mazes, and eating anything apple...it was the perfect way to ring in my thirties!

A New England tour with the Markhams

Our best friends, Sara and Steve surprised me one night by knocking our door, itinerary in hand, for a weekend planned touring New England! In 5 days we saw 7 states, all in the peak of fall splendor!

First stop: New Haven, Connecticut: YALE!

Next stop: Newport, Rhode Island: Cliff walks and mansion peeping!

Day 2: Cranberry highway in Mass. and Kittery, Maine

It was cranberry harvesting time where they flood the bogs so the cranberrys will float to the top, creating this beautiful sea of red!

We happened upon a cemetery on the side of the road with gorgeous maple trees...so we had to stop to play in the leaves!

Here is whats new and exciting in the of a 21 month old! (next update will be the big 2! WOW!)
-Stephen is running (twinkle toes)
-He can kick, throw, and understands to put his hands out to catch a ball
-He can walk on his tippy toes
-He can work a zipper
-He is starting to explore arts and crafts (finger painting, play-dough, stickers, watercolors...Yay!)
-He is mommys big helper! He likes to throw things away, help to cook, help do laundry
-We've started potty training (or introducing)
-He understands a lot of what you are saying to him
-His vocabulary is increasing every day! He will repeat words you say and has started putting words together into phrases.
-His current favorite book (and phrase) is "Go Dog Go!". He is learning stop and go and loves to run around shouting "go dogs go!"
-another favorite phrase "ohhhh noooo!"
-he is pretending more. One of his new favorite things is to take "puppy" for walks! (puppy gets LOTS of exercise!)
-He says ♥Mommy♥ (heart melting!)
-he gives hugs
-he has said "I love you"
-he is eating better (to the point that I am no longer worried there are sensory issues at bay but rather toddler issues)
-speaking of toddlers, it is becoming more and more apparent that 2 is right around the corner!

His favorite things: going outside, anything involving water (tubbys, swimming, the beach, washing hands, drinking from mommys sports bottle), watching movies (curious george, sid the science kid, mickey mouse clubhouse), Mickey Mouse, Trains (as in Thomas THE train) playing cars, listening and playing music, chasing each other around house "hiding", giving Harley treats, singing, sucking his thumb and "diddling" his ear, reading books

Happy 18 Month Birthday!

I intended to do this every 3 months but at 15 months we had the unfortunate toddlers fracture incident (from which we are now completely healed!) and I missed my opportunity to post. So here is an overdue update on Stephen!

-He can walk steadily now and is beginning to run
-he can kick a ball-he is learning to throw a ball
-he can stomp his feet-he can feed himself with a spoon
-he can drink with a straw
-he can scribble with help (left handed? right handed? he keeps us guessing!)
-he can walk up and down stairs holding hands
-he says mama (!), dada, kitty, Harley, please, thank you, more, milk, done, nananana (banana, or nana, depending on who you are asking), uh-oh, up, bye bye, whoo whoo (train), bubbles, cookie, this, bird, fish
-he consistently signs eat, milk, more, please, tubby, done, bye bye, cookie
-he loves to sing (especially the ABCs!)

-he recognizes animals and can associate some sounds (lion, dinosaur, monkey, horse)

-he gives kisses ("sugar") and makes a "muaaaahhh" sound
-he is starting to engage in some pretend play

-he has 10 teeth and more molars coming in

His favorite things: going outside, anything involving water (tubbys, swimming, the beach, washing hands, drinking from mommys sports bottle), watching movies (baby einstein, curious george, madagascar, mickey mouse clubhouse), Mickey Mouse, Trains, playing cars, bubbles, listening and playing music, getting tickled, chasing each other around house, "petting" Harley, singing, sucking his thumb and "diddling" his ear, reading books

We took a 2 week vacation to FL to check out various areas on the east coast and get an idea of where we will concentrate our job applications in the coming year (!). Blue and I checked out areas from Cocoa Beach to Fernandina Beach while Stephen soaked up fun filled days with Nana, Pop-Pop, Grammy, and Grandpa!

Dear Stephen,

We have been blessed with the miracle of breastfeeding. A task that we so struggled with in the beginning but finally pulled through. A lot of people consider only the role of breastfeeding as simply a means for nourishment and while it has done that it has also been so much more. It has been special bond between you and I - something that only we can do together and has provided many sweet calm moments in the busiest of days. It has forced your mama to take time outs and focus only on you. It has been a comfort for you when you are unsure or sick or upset. It has been a reassurance to me to know that you are being provided for and that my body is not only giving you food, but also giving your immune system a head start. And don't think that the thought hasn't crossed my mind that if we were ever in a disaster and without food, I would still be able to provide for you (I warned you that I am a worrier).
It has been a journey for us. Has it always been pleasant? No. You never liked to be covered up and felt that it was your right to snack and be entertained by the world around you at the same time. For the first year I either had to time outings around feedings or go to the car/find a dressing room/stand in a bathroom stall (ick.) while you nursed. At 12 months we weaned you during the day and it was liberating to me to be able to go out an not worry about who was going to get a peep show that day!
This week we are weaning again and at 16 months you are down to just a before bed nursing session. I worry (!) about weaning you too early (books say to let you self wean but I dont think that will ever happen) and I worry about the long term abandonment/oral fixation issues you might have in later years. But you seem to have hardly even noticed that I have been handing you a sippy cup of milk in the morning this week. And then I realize that we are not only weaning you, but we are weaning me as well. Nursing is the final bridge from baby to toddler that we have to cross and I think I am struggling with it more that you. I will miss our precious moments in the rocker where it is just the two of us together and I thank you for all the time you have given me.
And I realize that this is probably the first of many times that you will have to wean your mommy.

Blue and I decided years ago to forgo traditional Valentines Day celebrations and instead celebrate something more meaningful to us. February 20th marks the anniversary of our first date, 10 years ago. What a wonderful 10 years it has been!

Blue had a few days off and instead of heading out of town, we decided to explore things close to home. First stop: NY Aquarium.

Sea world it was not, but we had a great time anyway! (spoiled Floridians!)

Stephen's First Day of School

Stephen had his first day of school today! His teacher reported that he did really well; she said he loved the play gym, was busy playing with all the toys, and a certain little girl named Sierra caught his eye (apparently he was trying to talk to her all day, including during nap time!). Lancaster, PA Mini-cation

We made plans to visit Lancaster, PA for the weekend and see Amish country, browse through some farms, eat fresh cheese, and hit the outlets (pottery barn outlet! LOFT outlet! Stride Rite outlet!). Instead we spent the weekend in our hotel,
ordering room service,

going to the pool,

and admiring the 2 FEET of snow outside.

We did make it to the outlets on Sunday; however, there were no Amish buggys in sight. We had a nice relaxing family weekend.

Yesterday was a cuddle up on the couch and watch the snow outside kind of day (we got about a foot!). This morning the sun shone on beautiful blankets of pure, white snow. Keeping in mind that this is NJ, we ventured out early to get pictures while the snow was still white.

Before I show you those, however, I have to share with you the process of getting ready for our 10 minute venture.

layer 1- onesie and socks

layer 2- sweatshirt jumper and 2nd pair of socks ("why are we getting dressed 2 times?")

layer 3- swishy pants, inner lined jacket ("mom this is getting boring!")

layer 4 - mittens, hat, waterproof jacket and shoes ("Mooooooommmm, I cant move!!!")

And then we ventured outside...

and met frosty!

Dear Stephen,

Wow what a year it has been! It is amazing to think how much has changed over the past year. You have changed our lives in almost every way imaginable and its hard for me to remember what we did with our time before you. You have filled our lives with such love and laughter, transformed us into parents, and brought your daddy and I even closer than before.

It has been a wonderful year getting to know you and seeing the delight in your eyes as you discover new things. It makes feel as if I am seeing them for the first time, too. One of your newest tricks is pointing and babbling in your own little language. You love to bop up and down to music "dancing" and we often dance around the house together in sheer blissful joy. Your eyes light up every time you hear "Hey Stephen" by Taylor Swift or the Hot Dog Dance on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

I love seeing your smile first thing in the morning, which makes me forget that I am not a morning person. You are so happy and easy going. You know how to get other peoples attention and can always bring a smile their face. I love that I have been able to stay home with you and that our days have been filled with new discoveries, giggles, snuggles, and love.

You love to read books, especially "Hand Hand Fingers Thumb" and lift the flap books. You get a huge smile on your face every time you see Harley or Nana's and Pop-Pop's kitties. You love to take walks outside, play in water, scoot things along the floor. We call you the "muffin man" because of your love for muffins and all things carbohydrate. It is a little disheartening to me that you are starting to become picky about eating (you used to love broccoli!) but I am trying not to worry about it and let you exert an opinion. By the way, your mommy is worrier and this will be a constant struggle for me.

I was surprised by how intense this year has been for me. Although I always knew I would love you, the intensity of that love has stunned me. I cherish the moments that I can sit back and just watch you and your daddy interact. Your face lights up when you see him home from work and it seems as though the two of you already have your own secret little boy world. "Dada" is your favorite word and even though I know you can say "Mama" (you said it for the whole week of my birthday!) every time I say it to you, you look at me and say "Dadadadada!" in your scary Dada voice. I think you already realize how incredible your daddy is. I hope that someday you will be just like him.

Thank you for all that you have given us this past year. We look forward to discovering life with you and getting to know as your little personality unfolds. We love you more than you can even imagine.

We spent Thanksgiving in Hobe Sound and had a full house. This was the first year in a long time that I had been with family for a big holiday and it felt great. We just wished Blue could have been there.

Double digits! WOW!
Here is what is new this month:
-we're cruising! Stephen is walking all along the furniture, transferring from one thing to another with one hand
-he is a expert squatter
-bouncing to music
-turning pages in a book
-he has started imitating (sticking out tongue, noises)
-he has started to shake his head no (he is especially getting opinionated when it comes to food!)
-he has started to understand some sign language (more, eat, all done, bye-bye)
-a few times he has let go and balanced in standing without holding on for a second
-he babbles away
-he said "mama"
-hes stared to really play with toys
--his favorite things this month: monkeys, "petting" Harley, taking tubbys, being tickled, playing peek-a-boo and patty cake, reading hands hands fingers thumb, playing guitar and with his gator football (smart boy!)

Every year for Halloween the VanCortlandt Manor puts on Blaze. This year we went with our friends Betsy and Pete. It was a fantastic display of over 5000 carved pumpkins lit up and arranged all over the property.

For the big 3-0 I surprised Blue with a trip to FL. It was an action packed weekend of FL vs TN football, a birthday party at Beth's, and visiting with family and friends. It has been another exciting month!
-Stephen got his second tooth (bottom left)
-He has perfected the art of crawling and is very efficient at getting where he wants to go (although he is still not quick enough to catch Harley!)
-He can pull himself to stand
-When he gets excited he starts flapping his arms and kicking his feet
-He recognizes the sign for eat (sign language)
-he has starting bringing his hands to mid-line (maybe we'll be clapping next month?!)
-hes started imitating faces (sticking out tongue, etc)
-New foods hes tried: kiwi, pineapple, lentils, onion, cauliflower, apricot, cantaloupe
--his favorite things this month: monkeys, "petting" Harley, taking tubbys, being tickled, playing peek-a-boo, singing "Old MacDonald", trying to get the computer mouse, pulling to stand
